I started with my first Pembroke Welsh Corgi in 1989 (Boo) never planning to do more than love him and have him as part of my family. This grew into an immediate love for the breed and like lay’s potato chips, as they say, “you can’t just have one”! My second Pembroke male came in 1994. Oskar was a beautiful black headed tri that stole my heart and the heart of many others, he is the reason I became interested in showing. In 1995 I met Leane Gurry, who became the most influential and best friend/mentor one could ever ask for. She taught me so much about the breed and the standard and I quickly began my journey towards my goal of winning a championship with Oskar. I also learned about breeding, bloodlines and the ins and outs of healthy, well socialized and loving companions, although breeding was NOT my main priority, I even had litters of my own and I just loved having this breed around my home. There were many other Pembroke Welsh Corgis that came into my heart and into my home and even some that I rescued due to my love for the breed. In 1996 my championship came, CH. Oskar Wells, thanks to Frank Murphy, Sharon Turner and Leigh McBride.
A few years after losing my Oskar to DM, Degenerative Myelopathy, I became interested in the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and of course I turned to my long time friend Leane, who knows a lot of people in the dog world, and she referred me to Rita Hellegers. Rita comes with a long history of breeding top quality, healthy, sound Cardigans with excellent temperaments – and oh my gosh those ears!!! She has proven to me to have exceptional knowledge as I am still learning so much about this breed. We have become more than breeder/buyer, she too has become my mentor, who I turn to all the time with questions, and I am blessed to call her my friend.
In February of 2008 I got my first Cardigan, Coal, Cornerstone Welswood Make A Memory. I was so surprised as to what a difference this breed was from the Pembroke, not just simply a “tail” and some structural differences, but total differences. Coal became the best companion anyone could have asked for, and everyone who met him loved him and vice versa. Talk about great temperament! Although Coal did not turn out to be a show dog, I was truly taken by the breed. In May of 2009 I got my second Cardigan from Rita, Sterling, CH. Cornerstone Welswood Keep The Faith! Sterling gained his championship in Aug. 2013. Again I have to give thanks to my friend Frank Murphy for helping finish his final points and to kick it off getting him to a Herding Group 4!
My love for this breed continues to grow and I hope to have many more years of this Cardigan relationship building on the foundation I am so blessed to have. I still consider myself to be new to the Cardigan world I am NOT new to the Corgi world. I raise my Cardigans in a very loving hands on environment. They are not just dogs for me, they happen to be my babies so I give them the best of everything!
